Tehran, June 17: Iran’s opposition leader Mir-Hossein Moussavi indicated Wednesday that his supporters would continue their protests until new presidential elections were held. “We peacefully protest against election fraud and all we want is the annulment of the election and the holding of a new election without cheating,” the opposition leader said while calling on his supporters to stay calm and peaceful.
Moussavi condemned the series of arrests and the violence used against his supporters during Monday’s mass rally, saying that the people intend to achieve their rightful goals through peaceful means.
“All we are doing is holding peaceful protests against the unhealthy process of the election and the nature of these protests indicates that they would continue until the aims are reached,” Moussavi said on his website.
Moussavi denied claims made by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his government that the protests against alleged fraud in Friday’s election were influenced from abroad.
“The protest by the Green Wave [the colour chosen by Moussavi to symbolize change] is only the reflection of an internal and independent request … linking the Green Way to abroad is absurd,” he added.
He said all the efforts of state-run television to expose the protestors were linked to the outside world would be futile.
