Mosque targeted in arson attack

Berlin, August 05: A mosque in Berlin became the target of an arson attack, however no one was harmed, a local Berlin television station quoted police as saying.

Employees of the mosque in Berlin’s predominantly Muslim immigrant district of Neukoelln detected a fire in a building next to the mosque Sunday morning and alarmed police.

The fire which eventually extinguished itself, was reportedly lit in front of a basement window.

Authorities have begun their investigation of the arson attack.
Mosques across Germany have repeatedly been the focus of criminal Islamophobic attacks in recent years.

Germany’s society is still gripped by Islamophobia despite the peaceful presence of around 4.3 million Muslims of which 2.5 million are Turks.

Faced with daily verbal abuse and racial discrimination, Germany’s Muslim community is also battling educational problems for their children and a chronic lack of employment opportunity.
