Mehbooba tears CBI letter in J&K Assembly

Srinagar, July 30: Pandemonium reigned in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly for the third straight day on Wednesday with PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti tearing a copy of a CBI letter clearing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s name in the 2006 sex scandal case and alleged a cover-up.

As the chaos continued, a privilege motion against senior PDP leader Muzzafar Hussain Beigh who levelled the allegation against Omar on Tuesday triggering a controversy was admitted by Speaker Akbar Lone. Omar, who made a conditional resignation yesterday, was not present in the Assembly.

Slogan shouting members of the opposition PDP attacked the National Conference-led coalition government and pressed for a judicial probe into the entire case by a retired Supreme Court judge and staged a walkout. The PDP rejected the clean chit given by CBI alleging that the investigating agency was trying to shield political big-wigs of the state.

The House had to be adjourned once when repeated attempts to restore order by the Speaker failed.

“I have taken cognizance of the complaint signed by 12 MLAs and I cannot allow you to speak on the floor of the House,” Lone said while stopping Beigh from making any statement during the high-voltage proceedings of the House.

Beigh sought to find out under what rule he was being prevented from speaking. To this, the Speaker said he had all the powers.

The Speaker announced admission of the privilege motion against the PDP MLA from Baramulla for levelling allegations against the Chief Minister in violation of proper procedures and set business rules.
