Man live-streams suicide on Facebook after getting harassed by in-laws, say police

Gurdaspur, Punjab: A 27-year-old man from Gurdaspur live-streamed his suicide on Facebook. Paramjit Singh hanged himself at his residence on Wednesday after allegedly getting harassed by in-laws, police said on Thursday.

According to the station house officer, Paramjit was a crane operator in Karnataka and had come back to his Nanowal Jindarh village fifteen days ago after the birth of his son.

“The deceased was being mentally harassed by his in-laws. They wanted him to sell off his share in his parental property at his village and settle down with them at Daburji village of Amritsar district,” the SHO said as per a report by Hindustan Times.

After Paramjit’s son was born, he came back on Wednesday. SHO said that he was happy on the news and distributed sweets to his relatives and friends.

On seeing the Facebook video, Paramjit’s cousin JP Singh, who lives in Bahrain immediately called his father but no one answered his call. By the time he was able to contact Paramjit’s father, he was already dead.

A case under sections 306 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against Paramjit’s father-in-law Upkar Singh, mother-in-law Sarbjit Kaur and wife Baljit Kaur, Gurdaspur’s senior superintendent of police HS Bhullar said.
