Malaria raging in the city

Hyderabad, July 06: While malaria is raging in the city and adjacent districts, dengue fever has also started to make its presence felt. As per official data, there are 31 confirmed and 30 suspected cases of dengue in Hyderabad as of July 4. Sources in the health department say dengue test facilities are not available at major government hospitals while hospitals claim there hasn’t been any dengue case in the last two-three months.

In a recent meeting of the district medical and health officers (DMHOs) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials, the number of malaria cases was confirmed at 401 in Hyderabad and 120 in Ranga Reddy district, between January and June, 2011. Chikunguniya has not been reported in either Hyderabad or Ranga Reddy district recently but there have been one or two dengue cases every month since January.

“Some time ago, a village in Tandur mandal was affected by chikunguniya. The entire village was cordoned off, blood samples were collected and health camps were held. Since the disease was in its initial stages, it has been fully controlled from affecting other mandals. However, last week, there was a dengue case in Ranga Reddy district, but we have identified the hot spots and are taking measures to control it,” said the DMHO RR district, Dr Ch Jayakumari.

“In Medak district, while 15 cases of malaria have been reported to date, there hasn’t been any dengue or chikunguniya case yet,” informed the Medak district malaria officer, Dr G. Nagaya. Meanwhile, doctors at both Osmania General Hospital and Fever Hospital said they haven’t received any cases of dengue or chikunguniya in the last two-three months and they have the test kits in place.
