Kaiga Nuclear reactor shutdown after smoke alert

Karwar, April 10: A unit of the Kaiga nuclear power station was shut down on Saturday after smoke detection alarms went off.

In its statement, the NPCIL said the step to shut the 220 MW nuclear power plant was taken after a smoke detection alarm went off in the control room of Unit 3 of Kaiga Generation Station at around 4.30 am on Friday.

“It was a false alarm. There is no cause of concern. No incident has happened. The unit has been shut down as a precautionary measure,” said J P Gupta, station director at Kaiga.

He added there was a planned shut-down before May 2011 for routine surveillance tests which is carried out once in two years. After these are completed, Unit-3 will go online by April 17.

The Kaiga station has four nuclear power reactors, each with a capacity of 220 MW.
