Justice Eqbal sworn-in as Madras HC CJ

Chennai, June 11: Justice M Y Eqbal was sworn-in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court today.

Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala administered the oath of office to Justice Eqbal at the Raj Bhavan.

He replaces Justice H L Gokhale, who has been elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court.

59-year-old Eqbal was appointed Judge of the Patna High Court in 1996. He was moved to the Jharkhand High Court in November 2000.

Those who attended the swearing-in ceremony included Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin other senior state ministers and high ranking defence, state government and police officials.
