J&K prepaid mobile ban hearing in SC on Jan 8

New Delhi, December 16: The Supreme Court today set January 8, 2010 for hearing of the petition filed by National Panthers Party challenging the ban imposed on the use ofprepaid mobile connections in Jammu and Kashmir.

A Bench comprising Chief Jusitce K G Balakrishnan, Justice J M Panchal and Justice B S Chauhan fixed the date after Solicitor General Gopal Subrayamanyam pleaded for more time to respond to the petition.

He also pleaded for dropping Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar from the list of respondents since the Home Minitsry and Ministry of Communication and IT are already party in the case.

Mr Bhim Singh, appearing for the petitoner, contended before the court the ban imposed on prepaid connections was draconian and arbitrary. The State government was also opposed to the ban and wanted that people be allowed to use prepaid connections after proper security checks.
