Israeli police storm Jerusalem holy site

Jerusalem, October 25: Israeli police say its forces have raided Jerusalem’s famed Temple Mount after Palestinian demonstrators pelted them with stones.

Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said security forces used stun grenades to disperse the demonstrators on Sunday and arrested 12 people. There were no reports of injuries.

Ben-Ruby said police did not enter the al-Aqsa mosque atop the compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.

The site is Jerusalem’s holiest for both Muslims and Jews. Muslim leaders had called on Palestinians to defend the site against what they called “Jewish conquest.”

There have been repeated rumors among Palestinians that Jewish extremists are planning on harming the holy site. No such attempt have been made.
