Iraqis in Australia vote in parliamentary elections

Sydney, March 05: Iraqis living in Australia cast votes Friday in their homeland’s third elections since the US-led invasion in 2003. Australia is the first of 16 countries where expatriate Iraqis can join 19.8 million registered voters in Iraq.

Bassim al-Jabre, the High Electoral Commission of Iraq representative in Australia, said people who could prove they were born in Iraq could vote in any of eight cities in Australia.

“It has an impact on the election in Iraq because the number of Iraqis living outside of Iraq is quite a big number,” he told public broadcaster ABC.

Iraqis inside Iraq go to the polls this weekend to fill 325 seats in the Council of Representatives.
