Iranian journalist gets nine-year jail term over unrest

Tehran, December 02: An Iranian court judiciary issued a nine-year jail term against journalist and analyst Saeid Laylaz for involvement in the June post-election unrest, Fars news agency reported Wednesday.

Laylaz, chief editor of the economic daily Sarmayeh, was convicted of attending protest demonstrations and keeping classified information.

Laylaz’s lawyer Mahmoud Alizadeh said he would appeal the verdict within the 20-day legal time-period.

So far more than 80 protestors, dissidents and former reformist officials have been sentenced to jail terms for having accused the government of vote fraud which led to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election.

Between five to eight of them have been sentenced to death but granted the right to appeal.

The post-election unrest led to the most serious political crisis in Islamic Iran’s 30-year history and pushed even former high-ranking officials into the opposition.
