An IPL of a different kind

Mumbai, April 09: Taking a break from dealing with millions of tons of foodgrains and sugar, multinational commodity trading firms like Glencore, Toepfer, Concordia and Bunge will be playing a Twenty20 cricket tournament here from tomorrow.

On the lines of the hugely popular Indian Premier League (IPL), the organisers have named it Agri Premier League (APL).

The name of the teams sound interesting — Glencore gladiators, Toepfer Tigers, Bunge Bulldozers and so on.

The two-day event, a brainchild of trading firm Salasar’s Nikhil Daga, will see participation of 16 teams, up from eight last year, from trading houses, surveyors, logistics companies and brokers, a statement by the organisers said.

Total prize money of the tournament is Rs 14.25 lakh out of which the winner will get Rs 5 lakh, said Chetan Doshi of Concordia.
