Chandigarh, April 25: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Balbir Punj Sunday condemned the alleged tapping of phones of senior politicians and also called the Indian Premier League (IPL) controversy “the biggest scam of the 21st century”.
“Such things are reminiscent of the black days of the Emergency. We strongly condemn the government for illegally tapping the phones of senior leaders and politicians,” Punj, who is also the in-charge of BJP’s Chandigarh affairs, said while addressing reporters.
He added: “This is totally intolerable and all BJP leaders and workers are even prepared to go to jail to prevent these activities. The guilty should not be spared in this case. We demand that government should immediately make their stand clear on this issue.”
A news weekly had allegedly reported that the phones of some prominent political leaders were tapped.
Opposition political parties have been severely criticising the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over the alleged phone tapping.
Talking about the controversies erupting in the multi-billion IPL, Punj said: “IPL is the biggest scam of the 21st century. It has become a channel of bringing hawala money into the country.”
“Government should immediately engage investigation agencies to probe its operations and should make everything public,” he added.
