Indian man arrested for marrying 14 women

New Delhi, August 27: A former engineer with India’s flagship carrier, Air India, was arrested in Mumbai and accused of marrying 14 women over the past two and a half years, news reports said Thursday. The police arrested Tushar Waghmare, 40, alias Tushar Bapat, after five of the women he “married” registered complaints, the Times of India newspaper reported.

Waghmare was sacked by Air India soon after his August 18 arrest.

Police said Waghmare registered his profile with a marriage portal, saying he had divorced his wife in 2006 and was looking for a new spouse among working Brahmin women who could be divorcees or widows.

Waghmare has married 14 women since 2007, police said.

“None of the women or their parents ever thought of doing a background check on him as they would be impressed by his job profile,” RM Vhatkar, Mumbai deputy commissioner of police, was quoted as saying.

Vhatkar said Waghmare would usually spend three consecutive days with each of his wives and would tell them he had to travel for work when he moved on.

The police said Waghmare took care of all his 14 wives until his monthly salary of 70,000 rupees (about 1,430 dollars) ran out and then the wives looked after him.

Three of the women Waghmare married were either qualified engineers or architects. The rest were homemakers.
