India spending crores on VVIP security

New Delhi, July 24: While efforts to modernise India’s ageing Air Force have witnessed numerous delays, VIP and VVIP aircraft have faced no such problems.

NewsX has exclusive information that India has now signed a Rs 1,400 crore deal to buy 12 VVIP helicopters from Italy’s Augusta Westland.

This comes close on the heels of the induction of three Boeing business jets, also meant for VVIPs.

The helicopters will be used to bolster existing security cover for Ministers, Chief Ministers and others on the VVIP list.

The development comes at a time when India is struggling to complete defence deals over rampant allegations of corruption.

Efforts to modernise India’s ageing air force have so far moved at a slow pace. The trials for a multirole medium range combat aircraft have already been delayed by an year.

The first such trial will begin only later this week when Boeing’s F-18s are tested by Indian pilots.

Five more fighters from France, US, Russian and Swedish defence companies will also be tested before the world’s most hotly contested defence deal reaches its next stage.
