Include Turmeric in MSP list: Kavitha to Centre

MP Kavitha from Nizamabad today called on Union Agriculture Minister Radhamohan Singh and urged him to include turmeric crop in the list of those items get minimum support price from the Centre and help the farmers. She met the union minister and brought to his notice about problems pertaining to farmers, turmeric cultivators and need for setting up of a turmeric board. Later talking to reporters she said that the union minister was urged to set up a turmeric board at her constituency in Telangana State.

Since the MSP of turmeric has drastically come down to Rs 6000 from Rs 16000 we have asked Radhamohan Singh to include the turmeric crop into the list of those items that get MSP and special geographical identity. Though Telangana produces more quantity of turmeric than other states in India farmers are suffering severe loss due to lack of MSP, she deplored. On our demands we have presented a memorandum to the minister and sought immediate relief to the farmers she said.

Later the union Minister said that he will hold a meeting with officials and to take a final call on setting up of turmeric board. An official team will be sent to Telangana to study the issue of providing MSP to the commercial crop to restore past glory to farmers he said. Singh also stated that a Nuclear Seed Production Center will be set up in Jagtial in Karimnagar district.
