IAF’s female officer scales Mt Everest, creates history

Patna, June 29: Squadron leader Ms Nirupama Pandey, a class-I Gazetted officer in Indian Air Force, has added a feather in the cap of Bihar by becoming the first person from the state to climb, the highest mountain peak of the world, Mount Eeverest.

Nirupma Pandey, presently posted at the Air Force station Rajokri New Delhi under Western Air command, has achieved the distinction and added a new chapter in the glories of Bihar as she unfurled the Indian flag on June 25, 2011 on the Mount Everest (8848 mtrs/29028 ft) in Himalayan range.

Overwhelmed with her achievement, she expressed her feelings saying that scaling the highest peak was a proud moment in her life. Ms Pandey also said she was proud of being a Bihari.

Ms Pandey has made the state proud by not only becoming the first girl, but also the first person from Bihar to reach the summit of Everest.

With the remarkable achievement of Ms Nirupma, Bihar joined the league of 14 other Indian states which has at least one Mount Everest summiteers to its credit.
