Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Board has decided to install automatic reading meters on the commercial water connections.
It noted that there are more than 10000 commercial water connections but only 4000 water taps are registered under automatic reading meters.
This step has been taken to meet the deficit which the board has been incurring.
The owners of the water tap connections will be served with notices. If they don’t comply with the instructions, meters would be installed after 15 days after serving the notice.
It may be mentioned that each such meter costs Rs. 35000-40000. Cost of the meter would be collected from the consumers in installments which will be reflected in their monthly water bills.
At present, there are 9.6 lakh water connections in the city, out of which 1.5 lakh meters have become defunct. There are also rumours that some persons are tampering with the mechanical water meters which causes a loss of 40% income to the board.
