Hyderabad: 19-year-old female ragpicker thrashed by local mob at Mallepally

Hyderabad: In another such incident on Monday, a mob at Afzal Sagar area of Mallepally thrashed a 19-year-old woman ragpicker on the grounds of child-lifting rumours. The group of local residents beaten up Nagamani after she could not satisfactorily reply to the questions posed by the locals. However, she was rescued by the Habeeb Nagar police who reached the spot on being alerted.

A report by Times of India said that the locals grew suspicious over the ragpicker after they spotted her eating chips. The police said that the woman along with another ragpicker Nagaraju had consumed toddy after which she went to Balram Hotel to buy chips.

As rumours over child-lifting in the city are being circulated on social media, the locals interrogated Nagamani and thrashed her for not giving proper answers, maybe for being in a drunken state, police said. Nagamani was shifted to Haseeb Nagar police station and after the police investigated about her background, they could not find anything relating her with child-lifting.

In another similar incident on Saturday, a mob of around 500 people had thrashed a 52-year-old transgender to death after mistaking him for a child trafficker. The incident had occurred at Chandrayanagutta police limit when the deceased, Chandraiah, a native of Mahboobnagar district, along with his transgender son and a male friend were found begging near Naseeb Nagar.
