Hyderabad: A mob of around 500 people thrashed a 52-year-old transgender to death in Hyderabad on Saturday night after mistaking him for a child trafficker, said police per a report by TOI.
The incident occurred at Chandrayanagutta police limit when the deceased, Chandraiah, a native of Mahboobnagar district, along with his transgender son and a male friend were found begging near Naseeb Nagar.
“There have been some WhatsApp messages doing round, rumours about burglars, kidnappers and transgenders. One of the locals raised alarm saying the duo has come to kidnap children,” said Chandrayangutta inspector, Prakash Reddy.
People started to gather and the arguments led to a fight, and they started to beat up the transgenders. Moreover, when police meddled in and tried to rescue them, the mob pelted stones at them too. Chandraiah died at around 3 am in Osmania General Hospital, whereas, the other two are undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, a case under section 147 (Punishment for rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 302 (murder) and 307 (Attempt to murder) of IPC has been registered.
