The quake struck 155miles north-west of Puerto Maldonado in south-eastern Peru.
It rocked the nation at 10am UK time.
And its epicentre was at a depth of 379miles, accoridng to USGS data.
Earthquakes are common in Peru because it lies on the boundary of Nazca and South American tectonic plates.
Two people were killed in January and nearly 140 injured when a separate 7.1 magnitude quake hit Peru’s Arequipa region.
There have been no immediate reports of damage, although people on social media said they felt tremors as far as Arica in northern Chile.
Some residents said shocks struck Pucallpa, a Peruvian town.
No tsunami warning was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The earthquake was strongest in Ucayali. Ucayal is an inland region in Peru. Located in the Amazon rainforest, its name is derived from the Ucayali River. The regional capital is the city of Pucallpa.
