HC adjourns hearing on Jagan’s interim bail petition on Friday

High Court Justice B Chandra Kumar on Thursday adjourned the hearing on interim bail petition of YSR Congress party president Jagan Mohan Reddy to June 1 in connection with the disproportionate assets case.

In his fresh bail petition, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s counsel said that his client needs bail to campaign for the party in the by-elections scheduled to be held on June 12 for 18 Assembly constituencies and Nellore Lok Sabha constituency. The counsel said that Jagan would surrender before the court after the completion of election campaign on June 10 at 5 pm.

As it was difficult to sign in police register at the State capital, the counsel said that Jagan would report at the local police station daily wherever he participates in the campaign and attend the court on June 11.

In the counter petition, the CBI counsel opposed granting interim bail to Jagan as it might affect the progress of the case. The CBI raised apprehensions that Jagan might tamper with the evidence and influence the witnesses, if released on bail. The counsel said that those who were involved in the economic offences in the country have no right to seek freedom. He reminded that 142 MPs were booked under the Economic Offences Act so far.

The agency also submitted to the court that Jagan was not contesting the by-elections and hence his presence was not required for the campaigning.

After hearing the arguments and counter arguments, the court posted the petition for hearing on Friday. (INN)
