Gujarat riots: SC to decide Narendra Modi’s fate tomorrow

New Delhi, September 11: The Supreme Court will decide tomorrow the fate of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and 62 others for their alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat communal riots.

Special Investigation Team (SIT), set up by the apex court, in its report has told the court that the evidence is not adequate to prosecute Mr Modi.

Amicus curiae and senior counsel Raju Ramchandran has, however, raised question over the SIT report and his separate report has said that prime facie evidence is there to take action against the accused.

The then Vigilance DCP Sanjeev Bhatt has filed an affidavit, alleging that in a meeting held on February 27, 2002, Mr Modi had instructed the officers to go slow against the rioters.

According to Mr Bhatt, who claimed that he was present in the meeting, Mr Modi had added, “The anger of the Hindus is justified and minority community deserves to be taught a lesson.” The allegations have been vehemently denied by the Gujarat government.

A bench comprising Justices D K Jain, P Sathasivam and Aftab Alam will issue orders tomorrow on a petition filed by Zakia Ashan Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Mohammad Ashan Jafri who along with 69 others was massacred in Gulbarga society riots.

Besides Mr Modi, 12 office ministers and senior IAS and IPS officers are facing probe for their role in the riots.
