Gujarat orders investigation on custodial death of a tribal man

Surat: Gujarat state government has ordered a judicial investigation into the custodial death of a tribal man who was alleged of cow slaughtering. The man was arrested after the new cow protection law came into force.

Kodar Gamar died on Thursday under the custody of Sabarkantha police. The 60-year-old collapsed after taking a bath in the evening, a police official informed and added that Gamar complained of uneasiness in the morning, reported ht.

He was taken to a local hospital but soon was shifted to a Khedbrahma civil hospital, when his condition became more critical. He was then referred to Ahmedabad civil hospital, where he took his last breath. While he collapsed, it got recorded in the police CCTV footage, a police official reported.

A case was registered against Kodar Gamar, his son and three others on April 26 at Kheroj police station in Sabarkantha under the Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act 2011 for “slaughtering” cows.

Gamar was arrested along with two other people for the same allegation. The law is believed to be harshest out of all cattle protection laws with the provision of life imprisonment.
