Gujarat hooch tragedy: Death toll climbs to 65

Ahmedabad, July 09: With 17 more people dying during treatment at various hospitals in the city after consuming spurious liquor, the death toll in the hooch tragedy rose to 65 today.

“The death toll touched 65 as more people died since last night”, police said.

Several others are still undergoing treatment.

Police has detained one suspected bootlegger Harishankar Kahar alias Hariom, who allegedly supplied spurious liquor in the Majoor Gam and Odhav areas where most of the deaths have occurred.

Six police officials including two DySP rank officers and four PIs have been suspended and transfered in wake of the deaths.

Minister of State for Home Amit Shah had yesterday announced the formation of a enquiry commission headed by Retd High Court Justice Kamal Mehta to probe into the hooch tragedy and the report has to be submitted by November 30, 2009.
