New Delhi, June 3:Concerned over racial attacks on Indian students in Australia, the Centre would collect the details of students going abroad for education, Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said.
Based on the information gathered, a data bank of Non-Resident students along with other NRIs would be set up, Ravi told reporters at Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.
It has also come to the Centre’s notice that some ‘illegal groups’ sending students abroad for education were operating in South India like the fake job recruitment agents, Ravi said.
A bill to provide voting rights to NRIs was also under the Parliament’s consideration, he said.
Ravi said he had held discussions with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the attacks on Indian students.
A protective mechanism would be set up to “save” the students from such attacks, he said.
Ravi said the government would do everything to protect students studying abroad.
