Govt going back on main poll promises: TDP chief

Hyderabad, October 22: The Telugu Desam party has called upon its cadre to get ready to expose the State Government’s failure on all fronts and deviation from its prominent election promises.

It has also directed the cadre to take the coming GHMC elections as a challenge and get people’s mandate for the party’s ideology.

The party’s new State Committee and Politburo members took oath at the party’s headquarters here today. The ceremony was presided over by party chief N Chandrababu Naidu.

Seeta Dayakar Reddy (MLA), appointed Telugu Mahila president, and several others who were busy with party programmes could not take the oath. Seeta’s name is dragged into a controversy over the suicide of Rajaseswari, an agriculture officer. While addressing the inaugural session of the new State Committee meeting, Naidu accused the government of going back on two main election promises _ nine-hour power supply to the agricultural sector and sale of subsidised rice at Rs 2 a kilo. He said the two promises had helped the Congress come back to power in the State by a difference of just one per cent vote.

He said the government was also cutting the budget allocations to the welfare sectors under the pretext of economic recession. He charged Chief Minister K Rosaiah and his Council of Ministers with failure to restore normalcy in the flood-hit areas. The governments at the Centre and in the State were not helping the needy even 22 days after the flood havoc, he alleged.

He also expressed unhappiness at the Central Government’s refusal to provide liberal assistance to the State Government to get over the worst-ever devastation and reiterated his demand that the Centre provide financial assistance from the National Calamity Relief Fund (NCRF). He complimented the party leaders, workers and NGOs who participated in the relief and rehabilitation programmes in flood-affected areas.

He claimed that the TDP stood first in taking up several programmes in the flood-affected areas. The NTR Memorial Trust will take up several programmes at a cost of Rs 10 crore in the affected areas with the help of party MPs.

Rajya Sabha Member N Harikrishna handed over a cheque for Rs 30 lakh to the party president.
