GJM president granted bail for election offence

Siliguri, June 30: Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) president, Bimal Gurung was granted bail on a bond and surety of Rs 500 for allegedly threatening the electorate during the Lok Sabha elections in Darjeeling.

Gurung surrendered in the court of District Judicial Magistrate Debjyoti Mukherjee yesterday in Darjeeling where he was granted bail. The next date of hearing is August 24.

The GJM party chief had allegedly threatened the electorate of Darjeeling at a party convention at the Gymkhana Club on March 30 by stating that his party members would keep watch on each and every voter on election day.

The Darjeeling police had suo motu filed a case under section 171F, which deals in offences of undue influence of persons at an election.

The maximum punishment under the section was imprisonment of a year or fine, the lawyer said.
