GHMC nets Rs 21-cr taxes, HMWS&SB Rs 9 cr bill arrears as people relieve off old notes

Cancellation of old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fetched huge income to the GHMC in the form of taxes.

While the civic body collected a whopping Rs 21 crore on Friday, the Water Board got about Rs 9 crore through special counters opened for collecting tax arrears, it is learnt. It is likely that total taxes may cross Rs 50 crore mark by the midnight as people preferring to pay old notes. Thanks to the Centre for giving permission to the civic body when Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao made an appeal during his Delhi trip.

Confused over not easily getting their old currency notes exchanged and could not take money from ATMs which were not having sufficient money, the people are finding it easy to relieve off their old notes by paying taxes. The Appeal made by GHMC Mayor B Rammohan and Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy started yielding positive result of getting them huge funds in the form of taxes in 24 circles. In a couple of days also, the people of the GHMC area are likely to pay taxes at Mee Seva centers, special counters and civic service centers are remaining open on Saturday and Sunday as that of the banks. People were seen standing in long queues at these centers to pay taxes. The Minister asked the officials to work extra hours as the people were willing to pay taxes. (NSS)
