Germany wants nuclear issue to be main theme of Iran talks

Berlin, September 30: Germany wants Iran’s controversial nuclear programme be the main theme of the six-party talks with Tehran beginning in Geneva on Thursday, a government spokesman said.

“We can talk about other issues … but it has to be clear it is about the one theme that is worrying the international community,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Jens Ploetner said on Wednesday.

German government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said Berlin remained concerned at developments in Iran and the lack of cooperation shown by Teheran with the international community.

Ploetner said the Iranian delegation had to be aware that the nuclear programme had aroused major concern.

Many countries in the West believe Iran is enriching uranium in order to make nuclear weapons, but Tehran says its atomic programme is purely geared to producing energy for domestic needs.

Germany is talking part in the Geneva talks along with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – United States, Russia, China, Britain and France.

Iran said it wants to discuss global issues and not specifically its nuclear programme in Geneva.

“We are going into these talks with realistic expectations,” Ploetner said.
