Gang arrested with Counterfeit 5 rupee coins

Hyderabad, March 06: A five rupee coin has little value these days, what with the inflation rate going up constantly. But a gang of five thought otherwise. For them, five rupee coins were the best means to earn lakhs of rupees.

Many would be wondering how? The gang had a simple modus operandi — just make counterfeit five rupee coins and circulate them in the market. The five-member gang led by a Dubai-returned Mumbaikar, Ansari, made 30,000 fake five rupee coins each.

They also got them circulated by supplying in bulk to unsuspecting super markets and sweet shops in Banjara Hills and Tolichowki. Having earned some money thus, they were hoping to make more.

They ran out of luck as the Commissioner’s Task Force (West) sleuths got a wind of the racket and raided their manufacturing unit at Falaknuma in the old city.

Interesting explanation

Dreams shattered, Ansari and the four persons he had hired are cooling their heels in the lock-up now. When interrogators asked him why he chose to make fake five rupee coins instead of currency notes of Rs. 1,000 or Rs. 500, Ansari gave an interesting explanation. He actually wanted to make counterfeit coins used in Arab countries.

Mumbai-based Ansari’s family migrated to Dubai long ago. He completed his graduation and joined as supervisor at Dubai airport.

The local police arrested him for allegedly preparing fake bank documents.

After a nine-month jail term he came to India. On a visit to Hyderabad, he met a cab driver. Ansari shared his idea of making fake coins used in Arab countries first with the driver who arranged the technicians.

“They could not make them because there were too many signs on those coins,” the TF Inspector, L. Raja Venkat Reddy, said.

Then, he thought of counterfeit Indian five rupee coins. With the help of three technicians working in a plastic moulding unit, they started making five rupee coins.
