Muktsar (Punjab), September 06: Senior Congress leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Harcharan Singh Brar died following prolonged illness today, his family said.
Brar’s end, who also held the post of Governor in Haryana, came at his native village Sarai Nage in the district.
Brar, 87, is survived by wife, son and a daughter.
He had taken over as Chief Minister of Punjab on August 31, 1995 after the assassination of then Chief Minister Beant Singh in a bomb blast outside the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat in Chandigarh.
He held the post till November 21, 1996.
He was Governor of Haryana from September 24, 1977 to December 9, 1979.
He played an instrumental role in creation of Muktsar and Moga districts out of Faridkot district in Punjab.
Meanwhile, Haryana Governor Jagan Nath Pahadia and Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda have condoled Brar’s death.
