Farmers demand opium policy for current season

Kota, October 11: Central and state governments should formulate a policy for current opium crop season and make it applicable soon, an opium producers body has demanded.

In a memorandum submitted to the state Khadi and Gramodyog Minister Golma Devi yesterday, Rajasthan Region’s Opium Producers Action Committee (OPAC) patron Bhawani Shanker said the government was deliberately delaying the announcement of the new opium policy so as to make it difficult for the growers to start its cultivation.

OPAC president Ramkumar Yogi said for planing opium crop, the agriculturists have to make their farms ready only two months before sowing the crop.

In case the announcement of the policy was delayed further, the farmers would not be able to prepare the lands properly for its cultivation which will directly hit the opium yield in the state.
