Even after completion of life imprisonment many prisoners are not released

Hyderabad, December 04: In various prisons of the country, there are many prisoners who have completed the life imprisonment period and some are under trial prisoners.

Majority of them are the Muslims. In this connection, Sachar Committee also presented in its report that there are many Muslim prisoners whose cases are petty. Many of them are so poor that they can’t afford to engage a lawyer for submitting bail petition. Most of them are ignorant of the system of getting a bail. Govt. grants clemency to many prisoners on the occasion of the Republic Day every year.

Many prisoners sometimes face legal complications and thus they are deprived of clemency. These prisoners have a desire to meet their kith and kin and they have a feeling that one day or the other, they will be freed. Many prisoners are still in jail even after the completion of their life sentence..Now that 26th January 2012 is very near, they are anxious to know whether they will get clemency or not.

A prisoner from Cherlapally Jail wrote to Mr. Zaheeruddin Ali Khan, Managing Editor of Siasat requesting him to draw the attention of the government for his release. He told that on account of some leghal complications, he could not get clemency for the past two years. Some prisoners have even completed 16 to 20 years of inprisonment .

Govt. is dilly dallying their cases. Many of them were newly married and the wives of some of them were pregnant when they were arrested. Mahatma Gandhi was also imprisoned for six years. During his imprisonment , he consoled his fellow prisoners by saying that no person should be imprisoned for more than five years, otherwise, he will become rebellious.

The prisoners have requested him to impress upon the Govt., the need to consider their cases sympathetically for their release on the occasion of the next Reoublic Day falling on 26th January 2012.
