Sagar, December 16: Independent candidate Kamla Bua, a eunuch, has defeated nearest BJP rival Suman Ahirwar with a record margin of over 47,000 votes for the post of Mayor in Sagar Municipal Corporation inMadhya Pradesh.
Kamala bagged more than 60 per cent of the votes polled. Congress candidate Rekha Choudhary lost her deposit. The BJP was holding the post of Mayor for the past 10 years.
Party MPs had been elected for the past five times, while BJP MLAs had been getting elected since the past four times.
State BJP General Secretary and MP Bhupendra Singh was in-charge for the district. Under such circumstances, the victory of an independent candidate has come as a jolt to the BJP.
Kamla bagged 64,683 votes against 21,250 polled by BJP’s Sumar Ahirwar. Congress candidate Rekha Choudhary received 11,799 votes.
The Eunuch had never fought for development of the town but had joined the Rashtriya Viklang Party recently and started raising her voice in the favour of weaker sections. Kamla drew huge crowds for her election campaign where voters could be seen touching her feet.
Kamla said the victory belonged to public and she would maintain their confidence.
