Engineer dies, another critical in mishap at steel plant

Rourkela, May 16:An engineer was killed and another badly burnt while a worker escaped with minor injuries in a mishap at the boiler unit of a private steel manufacturing unit at Telkholi in Orissa’s Jharsuguda district
today, police said.

The incident occured at Bhusan Power and Steel’s boiling unit while the engineers entered a boiler to clean it.

Sources said the boiler had not yet cooled down when engineer Sunil Patel hailing from Balangir district, entered the boiler. He was singed by the hot fly ash inside the boiler and had to be extricated.

Saikat Chander, another engineer, who also entered the boiler after Sunil manged to come out but not before he was badly burnt, sources said adding that Boiler Operator, Sibaram Pati, who was standing nearby, sustained minor burns.

All three were rushed in an ambulance to Ispat General hospital (IGH) here,
about 150 km away, where Patel was declared dead, hospital sources said.

Chander who hails from Nagpur, suffered 90 per cent burn injuries and was stated to be in a critical condition.

Pati who was standing near the boiler, however, escaped with minor injuries sources said.

Pati later told newsmen in front of the hospital that he had warned the engineers not to enter the boiler as it had not fully cooled down. “They entered despite my asking them not to as the boiler was still hot. I did not enter inside”, he added.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Jharsuguda industrial belt following the accident. PTI
