Ek na Qabil-e- Faramosh Yaad

In the long journey of life what remains in the pouch (jholi)of a man’s life is only memories and these memories are the real assets of his life . Like human beings , memories also have life . They spend their lives and disappear from the pouch . The person who possesses these memories does not even know that what happens to them . Some memories are the gift of a particular age . sweet memories are the gift of such particular age . You must have understand the age I am referring to . However, as the age increases the man empties his pouch. How long can I bear the burden of memories and which one to bear and which one to forget when I turn back I recollect that many personalities associated with memories departed from us . But there is a memory which I have been keeping in my breast and its imprint could not diminish my memory come .i will admit you in my memories and take you to Osmania University of 1954. I was the student of final year of B.A of Osmania University. I had not yet gained anything from life not even the knowledge for which I had taken admission into the University. Even with this pauperization and bankruptcy. I don’t know why I used to tell that I am the richest person in the world. Such a rich poverty I could not get in the later period of my life . My entire time used to be spent in tumults with friends. The atmosphere of Osmania University , in those days was that the University was full of Urdu atmosphere . Day by day gathering of poets and literary sessions used to be held due to the presence of the poets like Maqdoom Mohiuddin , Allama Hyarath Badayani , Shahid Siddiqui , Suleman Areeb, Khursheed Ahmed Jami , Azeez Qaisi , shaaz Tamkanath and Waheed Akhter in Hyderabad. Everywhere there was a talk of poetry and literature . Although I had not established any association with literature then , but due to the majority of my friends, I was elected as Secretary of the Urdu Association of Arts Collage. In those days, to get selected as Secretary of Urdu Association was considered to be a great thing. Quite often, literary sessions used to be organized by this association in Arts Collage . At present, I recollect the memories of the literary session, the reminiscences of which are still fresh in my mind even today. In 1955, Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi had come to Hyderabad in a poets’ gathering (mushaira). I had seen him in this mushaira for the first time and I had listened to him also for the first time. In those days, the fame of jigar Muradabadi was spreading far and wide in the country . when he used to recite his poems with his peculiar melodious style, he used to create a delectable atmosphere. When he came to Hyderabad , he stayed in the house of Mr. Aejaz Siddiqui , the owner of Brazil Opticals, Moazzamjahi Market. His house was at Troop Bazaar. Relating to this Association, the road of that locality was named after Jigar as “Jigar Road.” ( I don’t know whether this name still continues or not). However, a Muradabadi friend of mine made a complaint that the roads of Muradabad are in a very bad condition. In such a case where was the need to construct a Muradabadi road in Hyderabad.

In the context of Jigar’s arrival in Hyderabad, a member of Urdu Association put forth a suggestion that why not we invite him to Urdu Association of Arts College. I was the Secretary of Urdu Association of Arts college and Afzal Mohammed (who became the Vice Chancellor of Ambedkar Open University Hyderabad later) was my classmate. His father Allama Hayrath Badayuni had very had good relations with Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi. Whenever he visited Hyderabad, he used to have literary meetings in Allama’s house. The President of our Association, Ghulam Ahmed , though he was a student of Economics, he was a very good orator. His favourite pastime was to participate in elocution competitions, get prizes and improve his economic condition.(Alas–! He is no more in this world.)When Ghulam Ahmed entrusted the responsibility of inviting Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi to me as the Secretary of Urdu Association, I told him in the enthusiasm of my youth than it is not a difficult task . I will tell Afzal Mohammed and he will tell his father Allama Hayrath Badayuni and in turn Allama Hayrath Badayuni will invite Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi and he will come. I told Afzal Mohammed and he told his father who conveyed it to Jigar Muradabadi but unmindfully I forgot to tell him the details of time and date of the literary meeting .In those days, the means of communication were very limited and perhaps that was the reasonthat in those days there used to be the tragedy of communication gap in literature and society very frequently. When I came to know that Hazrath Jigar Muradbadi has consented to come to our literary session, I announced the meeting immediately in the fervor of my youth. I did not even bother to meet Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi personally to invite him and also to give him the details of the meeting. There was an uproar of the visit of Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi in the University. On the day of literary meeting, I took a motor car and went to Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi to bring him to the University for the literary meeting. When I reached the residence of his host, I found that Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi was busy playing flash cards with his friends. Mr. Shahid Siddiqui, the famous Urdu columnist was also present there. When I disclosed the purpose of my visit, Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi told me very curtly that I did not inform him about the date and time of the literary meeting and so, he is unable to attend the meeting. What should I tell you how I felt at that time. I was like a person if he is cut no blood would be found in his body. I implored him very much. I even apologized him for my lapse but nothing did work. Mr. Shahid Siddiqui knew me a little bit as the brother of Mr. Mahboob Hussain Jigar He felt pity on me and said, Sir, unknowingly this youth committed a mistake. For God’s sake, please come to this meeting at least for some time. In order to emphasise his words, looking at me , he said “this young man is the younger brother of Mr. Mahboob Hussain Jigar of Hyderabad. “ For a moment , there appeared a glimpse of smile on his lips and soon it disappeared. He said , “despite it this young man is so irresponsible that he didn’t tell me about the date and time and made an announcement of the meeting. However, I won’t go for this meeting” this last tactics of passifying him also failed. I came back unsuccessful from there. The biggest problem for me was to go back to Arts college and tell his fans who had gathered there in hundreds the reason for his not coming . When I recollect this incident, my blood pressure increases even today. I reached the landscape Garde where from the entrance gate of Arts College is seen , I stopped my car for a while. I saw hundreds of students waiting there for Hazrath Jigar Murabadi. I told the President of Urdu association , Mr. Ghulam Ahmed who was an eloquent speaker and he was the only person who could have controlled this situation by his speech. I told him to go forward and I will follow him. Gulam Ahymed was an innocent person . When he heard the praise of his eloquent speech, he readily agreed to jump into Nimrod’s pyre (Aatish-e-Nimrood). He strutted and sat in the car and proceeded towards the University Arts College. He had not yet reached the Arts College Gate, we saw a taxi car going towards Arts College with a greater speed. Seated in it were Mr. Shahid Siddiqui and Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi. They were going towards the University. How can I express my feelings when I saw them going towards the University. I chased them on the motor cycle of a friend of mine. The eloquent speech of Ghulam Mohammed had just begun when Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi reached there. The students escorted him to Room number 57 where the function was organized. As a feeling of gratitude, when I met Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi, he tiold me that would speak to me later saying “ I have come on my own and not on your invitation.” Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi started reciting his couplets soon after his arrival. Contrary to the expectations, he was in his good mood. His fans were flooded in the room. He obliged every request and did not refuse anyone. The meeting was scheduled for one hour but it went on till two full hours. Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi not only recited his poems but recited the entire collection of his poems. He did not accept any remuneration which is normally offered to the poets by the Association. He also did not take any taxi fare. However, while going back, he told me very affectionately not to exhibit any such irresponsibility in future. From then onwards, I have borne in my mind this fact in such a manner that if I have to invite anybody for any meeting or any function, I contact him in such a way that I remind him frequently. People get vexed up with this habit of mine. How should I tell them that Hazrath Jigar Muradabadi has taught me such a lesson that I can’t forget it all my life. When I did not forget it during the past fifty eight years, how can I forget it now.
