EC, all-party meet tomorrow

New Delhi, October 03: The Election Commission has convened an all-party meeting tomorrow to discuss various electoral issues, including criminalisation of politics, Bihar elections, use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the role money power plays during polls.

The poll watchdog has invited the leaders of all political parties, including state and regional leaders. ”The meeting is tomorrow. The poll panel will take up various electoral issues, including criminalisation of politics, the use of money power during elections and also use of EVMs,’’ an official
said.

The six-phase Bihar elections will also be discussed, he added. Before the meeting tomorrow, former Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami has appealed to all parties to not to give tickets to those who have criminal records.

Ironically, when the EC is all set to discuss with all parties criminalisation of politics tomorrow, an analysis by the National Election Watch (NEW), a nationwide campaign working on electoral reforms, improving democracy and governance in the country, reveals that out of 183 candidates announced by different parties for the Bihar elections 80 have criminal records.
