Madurai, August 07: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s crackdown on all those accused of land grabbing has reached the DMK’s doorstep. Now, Union Minister Alagiri’s wife is facing charges of illegally acquiring land that belongs to Madurai Temple trust — a charge DMK Chief Karunanidhi says is vendetta politics being played by Jayalalithaa.
Alagiri’s wife is charged for having illegally acquired land that belonged to the Madurai Temple Trust — land that was allegedly transferred to her by a lottery businessman. The priest the temple is said to have approached the Chief Minister’s cell against Union Minister Alagiri’s wife for allegedly usurping 23 acres of land that originally belonged to the temple.
According to the petition filed by Subramania Iyer, the priest of a temple in Uthangudi near Madurai, the land was donated to the temple by one Nagendra Iyer in 1936 with the condition that it should not be sold.
However, a few months ago, the land was sold to controversial lottery businessman Santiago Martin using fake papers. Subsequently, power of attorney was granted to one Sugumaran, a relative of senior DMK leader K Anbazhagan.
From him, the ownership of land changed hands to Kanthi Alagiri, wife of the DMK strongman and the managing director of Dhaya Cyber Park, named after their son, said Iyer in his allegation.
DMK supremo M Karunanidhi claims having been victimised by Jayalalithaa. He said,”Police entered the person’s house at an untimely hour and arrested the person without any warrant. Is this how someone should be treated?”
Trouble is nearing fast for the DMK family, but no real explanation has come forth from them so far.
