Varanasi, May 19 (UNI) Congress General Secretary and incharge of Uttar Pradesh affairs Digvijay Singh, under attack on his reported comments on Al Qaeda Chief Osama Bin Laden after his encounter, tendered apologies at the party’s state convention inaugurated by Rahul Gandhi.
Without mentioning the comment or the person, the senior Congress leader put all the controversies at rest saying “I apologise if I had given any wrong statement.”
There had been a lot of controversy over his statement which seemed sympathetic towards Laden immediately after he was killed by the US forces in Pakistan recently.
Such was the reaction within the party that in a rebellious mode, some of the partymen from Varanasi, had demanded resignation from him.
Mr Singh said the Congress was ready to grab power in Uttar Pradesh where people were more than willing to pass on the mantle of power to his party.
“Poeple are looking at the Congress with hope and faith and the Congress has to deliver for them,” he stated.
He said the religious issues and the casteism had taken heavy toll on development of UP , which deserved a better deal in the future.
“No party, other than Congreess, could expedite the development in this biggest state of the country,” Mr Singh claimed, adding “the misrule of Ms Mayawati has already relegated the BSP to the lowest rung as far as the people’s preference is concerned.”
