Differences erupt in TJAC over agitation

Hyderabad, January 24: With the Telangana Rashtra Samiti keen to focus on the 2014 general elections and the other affiliates divided on the best possible way forward, sharp differences have surfaced between the constituents of the Telangana Joint Action Committee on how to keep up the pressure on the government to achieve Telangana statehood. TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao has suggested that since the Centre is in no mood to give Telan-gana before 2014, the best option would be to focus on electoral politics, ensure 70/80 Assembly seats and force a decision on the separate statehood demand.

Apart from the line adopted by the TRS, there are differences between the other TJAC constituents. The government employees are in no mood to take up another round of agitation right now, and are upset with the Congress and other parties ditching their Sakala Janula Samme. The employees are keen to bring pressure on the government through another strike to honour the agreements treating the 42-day long Sakala Janula Samme as leave, payment of salaries, perks and pensions to those retired pensions, etc.

The employees will take decision on serving a notice for strike again for fulfilling their demands to the government on Jan. 30. Besides this, the BJP, New Democracy and others in the TJAC are against the TRS line of electoral politics till 2014 and fear that if the agitational approach is kept on the backburner, the issue will die down. “Mr Rao is eyeing the 2014 elections which the employees and other parties differ. If the agitation tempo is not kept, it will die a natural death. We differ with Mr Rao’s idea,” a TNGO leader said.

However, the TRS leaders disagree, saying “Despite such strong agitations, the Centre is unmoved. It’s not easy to take up the agitate round the year.”
