Delhi police file FIRs in only 10% of cases

New Delhi, Janaury 02: Just after a week of Central Government’s advice to file FIRs for all the complaints made to the police, it has come to pass that Delhi Police don’t file FIRs in most of the cases.

According to recent study of PCR records, a stark revelation has dawned on the department that only 10% of the cases are filed as FIRs. In a rather mortifying disclosure, the report suggests that the incidents reported by the victims themselves are not considered as FIRs as thus they are not entered in the crime records.

Statistics suggest, nearly 14,000 calls were made by the alleged victims and out of that only 1,200 cases of snatchings were registered as FIRs. Moreover, Delhi Police has filed FIRs for 450 robbery cases after it received 3,000 calls.

It is to be noted that police have the discretionary power to file FIRs, but in the case of Delhi Police, the power seems to have not been used to serve the purpose of filing authentic cases of crime. Thus, the victims of crime feel deprived since they don’t see their demand met.

Now, in case FIRs are made mandatory by the Centre, there would be an expected 10-times increase in Delhi’s crime records. This time there will be no covering up to make crime records appear good on paper.
