Creamy layer GO kept on hold

Hyderabad, October 23: Yielding to the pressure from several BC organisations, the State Government has kept in abeyance GO 496 which imposed a ceiling on income for excluding creamy layer among the BCs from enjoying the benefit of reservation in appointments to government service.

At a meeting with a sub-committee on BC affairs here on Thursday, Chief Minister K Rosaiah directed officials to take immediate action in this regard.

Later in the evening, GO MS No:504 was issued keeping in abeyance GO 496. According to BC Welfare Minister M Mukesh Goud, the decision was taken in the wake of widespread unrest among the BC community.

‘‘The Chief Minister has discussed the issue with members of the BC sub-committee (Ministers D Nagendar, Botcha Satyanarayana and Mukesh) and the Advocate General in the meeting before deciding to keep the order in abeyance,’’ the Minister said.

Asked how a politically sensitive GO could be issued without the knowledge of the Chief Minister, Mukesh said: ‘‘The GO was issued in the routine course following a Supreme Court directive.’’ The Minister recalled issue of a similar GO in 2006 by then Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy which he later withdrew following protests.

Meanwhile, BC Welfare Association president R Krishnaiah urged the Chief Minister to constitute a sub-committee on the issue.
