Cracks in Telangana joint action, Congress to go on its own

Hyderabad, December 27: Just three days after Telangana Bandh observed jointly by Congress, TRS and BJP, cracks have started in the Telangana movement and the ruling Congress leaders are planning to go on their own keeping away from other opposition parties.

Already, the main opposition party Telugu Desam has refused to join in Joint Action Committee objecting over the presence of Congress, alleging the party as `betrayal’ for the cause. The efforts of Congress and TRS to take TDP with them failed.

On the other hand, CPI, which is supporting Telangana statehood also decided not to join in the movement. Meanwhile, a re-thinking has started amongCongress leaders on the issue of agitating joining hands with other opposition parties. As Congress alone is capable of forming Telangana state, a section of the party leaders, including some senior ministers are opposing joining hands with others. “Let the credit be owned by Congress itself”, said a senior minister.

The ministers from Telangana region, who have submitted their resignations to party Chief Sonia Gandhi from Dr K Rosaiah’s cabinet, are leaving for Delhi to lobby with their high command. The ministers have also decided not to attend cabinet meeting slated to be held on Wednesday. Thus they have given signal that they will not be holding their ministerial responsibilities till Centre came out with a time schedule programme on Telangana.

Party senior leaders like V Hanumantha Rao also opposing any tie-up with TRS and BJP. As Congress is the major party and having large number of MPs and MLAs in Telangana region, they are of the view that they should go ahead on their own.

TDP leadership is angry against TRS for starting viscious campaign against their party. TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu alleged that TRS was behind attack on its senior leader and former minister Dr N Janardhana Reddy, when the party legislators from Telangana region went Osmania University campus to express their solidarity with agitating students.

Though former union minister and senior BJP leader Ch Vidyasagara Rao is showing interest to allay with TRS in the agitation, many partyleaders in Telangana region expressing their reservations to allay with Congress and TRS. Party national secretary N Indrasena Reddy warned agitating students to be aware of evil designs of Congress, which had the history of diluting Telangana cause. He was also critical about TRS leadership.

Dr Janardhana Reddy of TDP alleged that when in 1969, it was Dr M Channa Reddy betrayed the Telangana people by surrendering to Indira Gandhi, now K Chandrasekhar Rao of TRS following his suit by surrendering to Sonia Gandhi.

Congress high-command seems to be happy with these cracks in Telangana stir and looking for a formula to take advantage from the situation.
