Court orders FIR against Geelani, Arundhati and others

New Delhi, November 28: A local court ordered registration of an FIR against Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and writer-activist Arundhati Roy on charges of sedition for their alleged anti-India statements.

According to the complainant Roy, Geelani and others who participated in an anti-India campaign and a seminar in the heart of the National Capital on October 21, made objectionable remarks over Kashmir’s integration with India.

Besides Geelani and Roy, the complainant sought prosecution of Prof S A R Geelani of Delhi University, acquitted in the Parliament attack case and Sheikh Showkat Hussain, Professor of Jammu and Kashmir University.

It was submitted before the Court that the accused had crossed all the limits of Freedom of Speech and Expression and incited the people to rebellion against the Indian state by saying Kashmir was never a part of India. Their conduct fell within the definition provided under sections 121A, 124, 124A, 153, 153A & 153B, 295A, 504 of the IPC and section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967.

Hearing the argument, Metropolitan Magistrate Navita Kumari Bagha ordered Tilak Marg police station to register an FIR against Roy and Geelani and submit a status report to the Court by January 6, 2011.
