Couple in Patiala jail demands conjugal rights

Patiala, April 02: The Punjab and Haryana High Court will hear one of the most unique cases they have heard in recent times. A couple, both in their 20s, who are facing death penalty and serving life sentence and in Patiala jail, has demanded conjugal rights in the jail.

The couple has demanded conjugal rights in the jail itself. In an appeal to the court, they have urged the court to grant them the right to lead a conjugal life since many developed nations allow such rights and the outcome has always been successful.

The couple, who had been married for eight months, had decided to kidnap a 16-year-old from Hoshiarpur in 2005. The couple also kidnapped the son of a local businessman from his school and demanded 50 lakhs in ransom.

They later gave sedatives to the teenager when his family refused to pay the amount.

According to Gursharan Kaur, the lawyer for the couple, Sonia wants to conceive before Jasvir, his husband is hanged. Such a demand has never been made before.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court is slated to hear the case on May 24.

Even if the court gives in to their request, the responsibility lies on the court to decide the fate of the couple’s child.
