Cops accused in fake encounter case surrender

Bhadohi (UP), October 27: Six policemen, accused in a fake encounter case of 1999, today surrendered before a local court and they were remanded in 14-day judicial custody.

They were among 32 policemen accused in the fake encounter case, in which they claimed that wanted gangster Dhananjay Singh was killed. But Singh is presently BSP MP from Jaunpur.

The policemen surrendered in the court of chief judicial magistrate, Intikhab Alam.

The CB-CID, which probed the case after a public outrage, had held them guilty and a chargesheet was filed in 2007.

A total of 21 accused had earlier surrendered and were later granted bail while three others had obtained anticipatory bail. One other had earlier appeared before the court and obtained bail while another expired.

The police in 1999 had killed four people in an “encounter” and had claimed that one of them was Singh.
