Congress stages walkout in Chhattisgarh Assembly

Raipur, January 12: Opposition Congress today staged a walkout in the Chhattisgarh Assembly to protest the police cane-charge on farmers in Dhamtri district.

Raising the issue after the Question Hour, Gurmukh Singh Hora (Congress) said several farmers were seriously injured in the police action.

The State Government had promised the farmers to provide free electricity and bonus on paddy procurement. But when these promises were not fulfilled, the farmers took to the streets but their protest was brutally suppressed by the police, Leader of Opposition Ravindra Choubey said.

When the opposition MLAs demanded adjournment motion to discuss the issue, Speaker Dharamala Kaushik said the matter can be discussed during routine business of the House.

Not satisfied, the MLAs indulged in slogan-shouting following which the Assembly was adjourned for five minutes.
