New Delhi, March 28: The Congress demanded resignation of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for denigrating the post of Chief Minister due to which he had to appear before the Special Investigation Team regarding mass murder of people during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said yesterday it was unprecedented that a person occupying the Constitutional post of the Chief Minister has been summoned for investigation into the case of mass murder.
He said if the BJP has any iota of morality left, it must ask Mr Modi to step down from the post of the Chief Minister as he has brought ill repute to the high office he holds.
Another Congress spokesman Jayanthi Natarajan said Mr Modi should be brought to justice as in the public perception he has been held guilty.
”I don’t think he has done anything extraordinary by appearing before the Special Investigation Team probing the Gujarat riots,”.
The party felt that Mr Modi was answerable to law and it was good that he finally responded to the SIT which has been appointed and empowered by the Supreme Court to look into the Gujarat riots that killed over a thousand people and destroyed property worth crores.
Law Minister Veerappa Moily termed it ”very unfortunate” that Mr Modi has landed himself in such a situation that he has to appear before the Special Investigation Team probing the Gujarat riots.
”It is most unfortunate that he landed himself to that kind of a situation. It is not desirable but unfortunately it has happened,” Mr Moily told reporters here.
