Hyderabad, October 14: If the Congress has its way, residents of Hyderabad are sure to bump into a statue of former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy at every major intersection.
Andhra Pradesh health minister and Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee president Danam Nagender told The Times of India on Tuesday that at least 30 statues of YSR are likely to be installed in Greater Hyderabad.
This when the number of statues in the area under the municipal corporation is not more than 60.Even though clearance has to be taken from a committee formed by the transport, roads and buildings department for installation of statues anywhere in the state, loyalists of Rajasekhara Reddy are competing with each other in erecting statues of their beloved leader.
Thousands of rupees will be required for maintenance of each statue every year.
While the first statue of YSR came up in the city last week, two more statues are scheduled to be unveiled on October 17. ‘‘None of these statues have secured the clearance from the official committee,’’ said an official working with the buildings department.
‘‘Statues are proposed in areas like Nampally railway station, Masab Tank, Banjara Hills, Yousufguda checkpost, S R Nagar and Attapur.
Several leaders want the YSR statue at prominent places like the Outer Ring Road as he contributed to the development of the city. We are planning at least 5 YSR statues on Outer Ring Road,’’ Nagender said.
